Zeaxanthin is an isomer of lutein, so some amount is formed directly in the retina from lutein. With age, reserves of lutein and zeaxanthin are catastrophically reduced if they are not regularly replenished with foods included in the diet. The antioxidant function of lutein and zeaxanthin is the ability to trap out-of-control oxygen molecules (free radicals) and reduce their aggressive effect on the body. In addition, lutein reduces the level of lipofuscin, a brown pigment that accumulates in cells with age.
